THE PROCESS

1. FEE PROPOSAL

If you are unsure as to the costs involved in employing a lighting designer, on receipt of floor plans and scope of works we are able to provide a fee proposal outlining the process and costs involved. Northcote Lighting works on an hourly basis for maximum efficiency to the client but realistic, approximate total costs are provided on a project by project basis.

2. CONCEPT DESIGN

3. DETAILED DESIGN

Following the initial meeting and on receipt of any other necessary information, full lighting plans will be done on AutoCAD, showing exact positioning of light fittings, circuiting and control locations. This will be supported with a full specification, specification sheets of proposed fittings and mood boards to illustrate design intent.

Subsequently, quotations will be obtained and forwarded from suppliers for client approval.

4. PROJECT MANAGEMENT/SITE VISITS

We are available throughout the build process to answer any questions that may arise. The more involvement we have the better as usually many elements of the project require on site coordination that cannot always be foreseen.

The importance of site visits is often underestimated but they form a crucial part in ensuring a smooth installation process. Architectural anomalies are not always translated on plan and working closely with contractors to deal with onsite alterations will prevent mistakes and/or additional cost implications. We recommend at least one site visit at first fix.

5.PURCHASING

Quotes from suppliers are obtained for the initial design and all subsequent revisions to ensure budget amendments have been taken into account. Purchasing of goods is done either by the client or contractor/electrician.

6. DECORATIVE LIGHT SOURCING

Whilst this usually forms part of the FF&E supplied by an interior designer where this is not the case Alex is happy to advise on decorative lighting choices. It is vitally important to ensure their dual function of visual interest and light output is realised.

7. COMMISSIONING

Even the smallest of projects will benefit from a final check that everything is as it should be and yes that can include changing a light bulb! Architectural lighting is checked to ensure angles have been achieved, beamwidths have been tweaked and glare control added should that be necessary. If any lighting control has been installed this will be programmed to achieve mood settings as per the client’s remit.
